Danilo has tended to play in games with more defensive demands, while Oleksandar Zinchenko has tended to play at home in matches City are expected to dominate. Guardiola may err on the side of caution and use Danilo. There are other selection considerations for Guardiola, too. John Stones did not look entirely comfortable against Wigan and in fact he has struggled slightly since returning from injury in January. Aymeric Laporte will be trusted to play in City’s biggest matches this season and it would be no surprise if he started on Sunday. Nicolas Otamendi was rested on Monday and is likely to come back into the side.Claudio Bravo has played all of City’s Carabao Cup matches and he will start on Sunday, with Ederson on the bench.Man City possible XIARSENAL TEAM NEWS Arsene Wenger says Arsenal have no injuries for Sunday’s game. So we will know more about it tomorrow [Saturday].”On Ozil, the Frenchman added: “He had a good session yesterday [Thursday] which he absorbed well. We’ll have to see how he responds to it, but I think he will be alright.”OPTA MATCH FACTS Arsenal have won just two of their last 11 Premier League meetings with Manchester City, drawing five and losing four.   Arsenal have recorded just two victories in their last 16 Premier League matches against fellow ‘big six’ teams (D6 L8). LAFC makes statement with debut win in Seattle

first_imgMLS Bob Bradley’s LAFC makes statement with debut MLS win in Seattle Ives Galarcep @soccerbyives Last updated 1 year ago 14:31 5/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Bob Bradley LAFC MLS Steven Bisig MLS Los Angeles Seattle Sounders v Los Angeles Seattle Sounders The expansion side enjoyed a dream start to life in MLS, with Diego Rossi’s winning goal and Tyler Miller’s big saves sparking an season-opening upset Bob Bradley hadn’t coached a match in more than a year, the longest such stretch of his coaching career, but he was rewarded for that wait on Sunday, as his Los Angeles FC made a dream start to life in Major League Soccer. The expansion MLS side went into CenturyLink Field and knocked off the two-time defending Western Conference champion Seattle Sounders, 1-0, to become the first team since those very same Sounders in 2009 to kick off an expansion season with a shutout victory, and first since the 2011 Vancouver Whitecaps to win their MLS debut. It was far from a dominant performance, and came, at least in part, with the help of the fact the Sounders rested some starters. But that doesn’t take away from the reality that LAFC looked like and played like a real team and not a collection of parts hastily thrown together, which can sometimes be the case with first-year squads. Editors’ Picks Williams case shows Solskjaer isn’t holding Man Utd’s youngsters back – he’s protecting them Goalkeeper crisis! Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp “When you’re starting out as a team, you have to learn how to win different kinds of games,” Bradley said. “A lot of guys gave big efforts.”The dynamic duo of Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi figured to be the focal point of LAFC’s attack this season and needed just 11 minutes to let the rest of the league know just what a problem they will be to defend. Rossi’s one-time blast was the fastest debut goal by an MLS expansion team in league history, and while LAFC couldn’t generate a second, Rossi’s thunderbolt was a worthy first strike.Just as impressive was the defense Bradley was able to build, one that will help LAFC contend in year one. Even with Walker Zimmerman forced out of the lineup before kickoff, the defense was still good enough to keep a dangerous Sounders attack at bay, though it needed goalkeeper Tyler Miller to make a handful of excellent saves against his former team. The Sounders made LAFC earn it, even though veterans Clint Dempsey and Chad Marshall sat the match out to be ready for a vital CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal clash with Chivas on Wednesday. Seattle still had enough firepower to spoil the visiting team’s MLS debut, especially with second-half substitutes Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Handwalla Bwana giving the Sounders a much-needed spark, forcing Miller into a total of seven saves on the night. As much as Seattle was missing key players, LAFC was also without some top options as well. Egyptian midfielder Omar Gaber was left on the bench after having been injured in preseason, Zimmerman was forced out, and newly-acquired Colombian midfielder Eduard Atuesta had yet to integrate into the squad. Throw in long-rumored designated player target Andre Horta, who could still be signed during the current transfer window, and you realize how far away LAFC still is from being the finished product.Nobody knows how much further there is still to go than Bob Bradley, who took the expansion Chicago Fire to an MLS Cup title 20 years ago. He knows how important a good preseason foundation was to build on, but also knows there is no rush to have his team reach its full potential just yet. Unlike his last job — Bradley’s doomed stint at Swansea City — the former U.S. national team coach actually had a hand in building this team. From Miller, who Bradley took first in the MLS expansion draft, to Benny Feilhaber, who he took to the 2010 World Cup during his time as U.S. coach, to first-round draft pick Joao Moutinho, who showed well in his professional debut.LAFC MLS“I don’t think we showed, football-wise, what we’re capable of, but that’s only going to get better,” Bradley said. “I’m very confident that, as we build this team, that we’re going to see some real football.”LAFC still has plenty to work on, including how better to hold onto the ball in order to avoid being bombarded with pressure like we saw on Sunday, but the foundation is clearly there for LAFC to be a strong expansion team, rather than a pushover. With a tough defensive nucleus, and the Vela-Rossi tandem up top, the newest MLS team is already a handful and will only get tougher as the final pieces to the puzzle are added in the coming weeks.Things won’t get any easier for the club though. LAFC faces a tough opening schedule, with five more road games looming before unveiling its new stadium with a visit from none other than the same Sounders team it just defeated. Earning points during this season-opening road trip is key to improving the team’s chances of being a serious playoff contender.”A lot of positives, great to win, but still a lot of work to do,” Bradley said.Could LAFC follow the path of Bradley’s previous expansion team and win a title? It’s way too early for that sort of talk, but what was made clear on Sunday is that Bradley made the most of his time away from the sidelines and has put together a team ready to be competitive against the very best that MLS has to offer.last_img read more

Mourinho questions United mentality

first_imgJosé Mourinho Matic was an island of personality – Mourinho questions United mentality Jamie Smith Last updated 1 year ago 06:49 18/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(3) José Mourinho Manchester United Romelu Lukaku Brighton & Hove Albion FA Cup Manchester United v Brighton & Hove Albion Videos Despite seeing Manchester United progress into the semi-finals of the FA Cup by beating Brighton, the manager was annoyed by his side Jose Mourinho singled out Nemanja Matic as an “island of personality” as he criticised the mentality of his Manchester United players despite booking a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.Romelu Lukaku and Matic converted United’s only two efforts on target in a 2-0 win against Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday to set up a trip to Wembley.Mourinho had told his players to “grow up” following Tuesday’s surprise defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League and the Portuguese left Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez as unused substitutes against Brighton. Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp Luke Shaw was hauled off at half-time despite playing a role in Lukaku’s opener, with Mourinho unimpressed with United’s performance in a dour display against the Seagulls.”I didn’t like the game,” Mourinho told BT Sport. “I think we deserved to win because I think the game was in control for the majority, we scored two and they didn’t score, so we clearly deserved it but we didn’t play the way I want.”I had a reaction from some. Some players were mentally strong enough with football quality and that was the reason we won, but a team of 11 must have six or seven performing and wanting responsibility to play. I’m not happy with the performance, I’m happy with the result.”When I spend two days with faster build-up and ball arriving earlier between lines and in attacking areas it depends on decisions in possession and movement in attack, I spend two days working on it but attacking players don’t want the ball, defenders taking square passes, I have to feel frustrated.”The biggest frustration is not a bad result because this can happen, it’s when I work on the [training] pitch and don’t see the situations on the pitch.”Many, many times Matic was an island of personality and desire and control, surrounded by a lack of personality, class and desire.”[Scott] McTominay lost more passes than in all his games altogether but he was a Manchester United player, he gives to the team.”It was a question of mentality. The perfect Manchester United player has quality and personality and is consistent. When you play bad you must have personality.”#MUFC in the @EmiratesFACup this season:Played Scored Conceded Bring on the semi-finals  pic.twitter.com/Ryci0MgS6e— Manchester United (@ManUtd) March 17, 2018Although Mourinho did not single out individuals for criticism, Shaw’s withdrawal for Ashley Young at half-time was a sign the United manager remains doubtful over the left-back’s qualities.”It was a decision, one player for another in the same position,” Mourinho said. “I wanted to defend better, I want my defensive line to be more solid in response to some situations and I want more personality in the team.”last_img read more

Spencer Sanders’ Night Compares Well to Other OSU Quarterback Debuts

first_imgTo start, it’s notable that J.W. Walsh had already played in three games before drawing his first start. Of that group, Sanders and Wes Lunt won their starts, as OSU throttled Savannah State 84-0 in the 2012 season opener.Sanders and Walsh were redshirt freshmen, whereas Mason Rudolph and Lunt were true freshmen. Sanders was more dynamic on his feet than those other three in his first start. His 109 rushing yards were 52 more than what Walsh had.Now here is a look at Sanders’ numbers compared to the first start numbers of the top quarterbacks of the Mike Gundy era: 2014Mason Rudolph132528122 2010Brandon Weeden223021830 2014Mason Rudolph132528122 SeasonPlayerCompletionsAttemptsYardsTouchdownsINTs 2012Wes Lunt111112900 2007Zac Robinson183719112 If a freshman quarterback is good enough to start a game at Oklahoma State, odds are that guy is pretty good at football. In the Cowboys’ 52-36 victory against Oregon State Friday night/Saturday morning in Corvallis, Spencer Sanders became the fourth freshman gunslinger to start a game at Oklahoma State is the past 10 seasons. The Beavers’ defense didn’t put up the biggest fight, but Sanders was undeniably electric. He finished his first game of college football with 312 total yards, a 79-percent completion percentage and three scores. Here are Sanders’ passing numbers compared to the other three freshmen to start games at OSU in the past 10 seasons.center_img While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. Rudolph and Robinson each lost their first start, with Robinson’s coming against Troy. There is obviously a lot more that goes into getting these numbers, and this early in Sanders’ career, these aren’t more than numbers on a chart. In Career Game, Chuba Hubbard is the Bell Cow OSU Needs

first_imgHe filled it up all night and churned out tough run after tough run, but he punctuated his latest career performance with a 33-yard nail hammered into the Golden Hurricane’s coffin with just two minutes remaining. He also had a 34-yard run called back because of an offensive 12 men on the field penalty. face palm emojiChuba is putting up big numbers early, and gaining a little more than momentum as he enters Big 12 play.Oklahoma St RB Chuba Hubbard a Heisman dark horse. Already with 500+ rushing yards/7 TDs. Statement opportunity at Texas next weekend— Jake Trotter (@Jake_Trotter) September 14, 2019The actual count is 521 yards and 66 carries in three games (nearly half of his total carries in 13 games last year). That’s a hair under 8 yards per carry as well as seven rushing touchdowns. It’s still very early, but a little Heisman buzz is not unwarranted for the Cowboys’ new bell-cow back. Because of our subscribers, we’ve been able to improve our work and provide the best OSU news and community anywhere online. Help us keep that up. It was an ugly outing for just about every phase of OSU football on Saturday, at least at one time or another — except one.Spencer Sanders and the Cowboys passing game suffered through its first stinker of his young career. Sanders singlehandedly lost the turnover battle 2-0. Tylan Wallace was electric when he was able to avoid Tulsa’s apparent (and fairly successful) PI-defensive strategy. What’s worse, this was the lowest passing yardage total (169 yards, one TD, one INT) by any Oklahoma State team since Daxx Garman went for 158, one TD and one pick, and barely survived the 2014 Texas game. The defense came up with some big stops in the second half, but was rather welcoming to Tulsa early, allowing 171 yards, six yards per play and 14 points in the second quarter to allow the Golden Hurricane to take a 21-20 halftime lead. It’s Tulsa, maybe I give Jim Knowles’ crew a B-.But OSU’s ground game, led by Chuba Hubbard, was the Cowboys offense. He kept them afloat early and pushed them to victory late.Hubbard turned in a career-high of 256 yards on 32 carries (8 yards per), both of which topped a career mark set two weeks ago in Corvallis. His three rushing scores tied a career best for the second time.Chuba was unstoppable in Tulsa and has been so far this season, anytime it has counted.Mike Gundy said he pulled Chuba against McNeese because he fumbled his second carry of the game (though he stayed in for six more and a whole other quarter). But regardless of whether he sat because it was McNeese or because of ball security, the Cowboys didn’t need him to beat an FCS opponent. They did need him against Tulsa, and he delivered big.The first play from scrimmage was a handoff to the world-class speedster, and he took it 75 yards to the house.Shortly after that he added a 30-yard score, pushing OSU to a 14-0 lead and padding the numbers on an all-time opening quarter.last_img read more

Two Things We Learned from Oklahoma State’s Win over TCU, One We Didn’t

Oklahoma State moved to 6-3 on Saturday with its wild win over TCU and is now bowl eligible for the 14th-straight season. As the Cowboys head into a weird second bye week before their final three-game stretch of the regular season, let’s look back at their sixth win. Here are two things we learned from OSU-TCU and one thing we didn’t. First off, what we learned.Sanders is ImprovingIf not for the apparently obligatory interception in the fourth quarter, this conclusion would be more obvious.Sanders is an elite runner and has the ability to make just about any throw you need him to, those two things we’ve known for a while. But his decision-making has improved as the weeks have gone by, and you can tell that he’s made a concerted effort to keep two mitts on the ball when he scrambles.I was actually okay with the first-half game plan of running the wildcat with Spencer to loosen things up and then taking your shots down the field, especially since he was moving the chains. That will work for now. While it’s obvious that the coaching staff is still trying to protect him. (I get it. He’s thrown at least one pick in the last seven games). But at some point you have to take the training wheels off.If Spencer continues improving in his reads and cutting down on the turnovers, hopefully he’ll earn the keys to the offense by year’s end. Maybe just in time for Bedlam. This Defense Can Take It BackI was reticent to heap too much praise on OSU’s defense following its three-interception game against Brock Purdy — who barely throws a pick — just in case it was a fluke. But back-to-back weeks of watching this group make level-headed QBs look downright reckless, and I’m ready to start the movement. #TTIB (They takin’ it back).Purdy threw four in seven games, then three in the fourth quarter against the Cowboys. Max Duggan threw the first one of his college career the week before and then threw three more to OSU.In just two weeks, the team that was tied for lowest interceptions in the league (three) is now fourth with nine. Add in the five recovered fumbles, and OSU is T-2nd in turnovers gained in the Big 12 with 14. Baylor is alone in the lead with 15 (thanks largely to certain homecoming game that shall not be mentioned). Now, the one thing we didn’t learn…How Badly Tylan Will Be MissedYou might be saying, But Kyle, Dillon Stoner was one early drop from having a very Tylan stat line on just four catches. And you’d be right. But when you rely so heavily on your ground game (for good reason) and attempt just 15 passes, it makes it hard to really know what you have in terms of talent and depth at receiver.Let me be clear. I think OSU has enough talent at wideout to win the next two games, but when it comes to Bedlam — when you need your stars — I think the lack of Tylan’s playmaking ability will be glaring.Maybe that point is moot. It is Bedlam. But there exists a reality, not too far removed from our own, where Oklahoma State continues this trend of improvement and is hitting on all cylinders on the last week of the season when the Sooners show up. If we did end up in that world and OSU makes a game out of Bedlam, it’s going to be shame that No. 2 is sitting on the sidelines.last_img read more
