How to buy insurance if you missed the deadline

first_imgIf you miss the deadline for health insurance, you may still be able to get coverage. Here are your options:Special Enrollment PeriodYou may still be able to sign up for a health plan if you have something called a “qualifying life event” that would make you eligible for a special enrollment period. Here are some common qualifying life events:- Having a baby, adopting a child, or placing a child for adoption. Coverage can take effect the day of the event, and the enrollment window is open up to 60 days afterwards.- Getting married. Getting wed can make you eligible for a special enrollment period, which will take effect the first day of the month after you enroll. In this instance, your enrollment window is open for up to 60 days after your marriage (you can’t enroll until getting married!)- Losing other health coverage. If you lost your previous coverage after the cutoff, you may be able to qualify for special enrollment. This could include losing a job-based plan, aging off a parent’s coverage at age 26, losing coverage through divorce, losing eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP, and other similar events. Coverage can take effect the first day of the month after you enroll and after the loss of coverage. Make note that the enrollment window runs from 60 days before to 60 days after losing your other coverage. (Losing a health plan due to non-payment of premiums does not qualify as losing health coverage. So if you’re planning on leaving your full-time job to go freelance, you can buy health insurance when you leave your job.- Being denied Medicaid or CHIP coverage. Medicaid and CHIP are nationwide programs that provide coverage to people with low incomes or disabilities — for both of these programs, you can apply anytime. If you are denied Medicaid or CHIP coverage, you may be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan up to 60 days after the denial. Coverage can take effect the first day of the month after you enroll.- Major income changes. If you lose a huge client and are already enrolled in a health plan, you may re-apply for subsidies or get higher subsidies. Just note that you can’t apply for a new plan or change plans; you can only change your subsidy amount. But you can also become ineligible for subsidies if you made more income than you expected!- Moving. You may be eligible for a special enrollment period if you move and your relocation affects your rate because you moved into a different rating region. You may also qualify if your move affects your plan options, for instance if you move out of the service area for one carrier and into the service area for another, or if you move to another state.Other qualifying life eventsIn addition to the situations listed above, there are a number of other life events that could qualify you for a special enrollment period. Visit’s list of events to see if you can obtain coverage.Qualifying for Special Enrollment due to a “Complex Situation”You may still be able to obtain coverage if a “complex situation” prevented you from enrolling before the deadline. This could include an unexpected hospitalization, a natural disaster, or enrollment error that prevented you from obtaining coverage before the deadline. See if you qualify here. Are you ineligible for special enrollment? About that fee…If you don’t qualify for special enrollment, then you probably can’t get health coverage until the next open enrollment period, scheduled for November 15, 2015.Without health coverage, you’ll have to pay a fee (2% of your income or $325 per adult, whichever is higher) or get a fee exemption. Uniform Predictions for Oklahoma State-Oregon State in Corvallis

first_imgBack in ⬛️See you In 24 hours 👀 @41Million_ #BTD is— Oregon State Football (@BeaverFootball) August 30, 2019Justin Southwell (BWB): 2012 was a down year (8-5), but Oklahoma State bounced back in 2013 (10-3). 2014 was a down year (7-6), but Oklahoma State bounced back in 2015 (10-3). The 2013 and 2015 10-win seasons started with the Cowboys on the road in Black-White-Black. I expect history to repeat itself with Oklahoma State bouncing back from a down year by kicking off their campaign with a familiar combo (B/W/B).I would expect them to go with the brand logo to let Oregon State know who the real OSU is. It can be orange, it can be chrome, it can be whatever, as long as it’s the brand. While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. It’s a big ask from us to you, but it also comes with a load of benefits like ad-free browsing (ads stink!), access to our premium room in The Chamber and monthly giveaways. The other thing it does is help stabilize our business into the future. As it turns out, sending folks on the road to cover games and provide 24/7 Pokes coverage like the excellent article you just read costs money. Because of our subscribers, we’ve been able to improve our work and provide the best OSU news and community anywhere online. Help us keep that up. The uniform predictions are back, and there will be a lot of orange and black in Oregon this weekend. The Beavers will be in all black, and the Pokes will counter with white jerseys. All that remains is the OSU helmets and pants. Here are our guesses.Carson Cunningham (BWB): I want to see the Cowboys flex on Oregon State by coming out in helmets with the interlocking OSU logo. They won’t do that but I do think they show off that they’re the real OSU and mix in a lot of black and orange. I’ll go matte black helmet with the brand on it, white jerseys and black pants.Kyle Porter (WWO): Oregon State’s all-black announcement solidifies this guess for me. I think OSU going nearly opposite with a WWO look and those filthy helmets from the TCU game last season (see above) would be premium.last_img read more

Customers Should Bear Sulphur Cap Costs to Save Industry

first_imgzoomImage Courtesy: Stolt -Nielsen Stolt-Nielsen’s CEO, Niels Stolt-Nielsen, believes the costs stemming from the industry’s switch to compliant fuels as of January 2020, should be met by customers.Namely, as of January 1st, 2020, all ships will have to consume low sulfur fuel with a sulfur content of 0.5%, down from 3.5% today, if not fitted with scrubbers.Belgium’s shipowner plans to meet the new regulations by fueling its ships with marine gas oil (MGO) or other type of new fuels are under development by the oil companies.“Ships can fit in scrubbers, but realistically, as it stands today, around 5% of the global fleet has announced or has installed scrubbers. So a very small part of it,” Stolt-Nielsen said in a conference call on Thursday, October 4.“For us, if you take the current spread between MGO, and high-sulfur fuel oils (HSFO), based on our fuel consumption, if we have an additional USD 300 per tonne cost, our total cost per year is USD 150 million. So it is clear that unless we are able to pass that cost onto our customers, we will be going out of business very quickly. The industry will be going out of business very quickly.”Stolt-Nielsen explained the move was necessary taking into account that the majority of the industry is losing money.Container liners have already announced their plans to levy sulphur cap surcharges as of next year, a move which was not welcomed by shippers. For the third quarter of 2018, the company reported a net profit attributable to shareholders of USD 3 million, after a USD 12.9 million negative impact resulting from a change in the accounting for the company’s investment in Avance Gas Holdings Limited. Revenue for the quarter stood  at USD 543.1 million. Net profit was down when compared with a net profit of USD 9.5 million in the second quarter of 2018.Net profit for the first nine months was USD 51.3 million, with revenue of USD 1.6 billion, up from USD 49.2 million, and revenue of USD 1.5 billion in the same period last year.last_img read more

Ikea to phase out singleuse plastic by 2020

first_imgTORONTO – Ikea and A&W are the latest big chains to join the war against single-use plastics, with each promising to limit waste production amid a growing public outcry over pollution.Ikea said Friday it would eliminate single-use plastic products from its shelves by 2020, including straws, plates, cups, freezer bags, garbage bags and plastic-coated paper plates and cups. And A&W Canada said it wanted to be the first fast food chain in North America to eliminate plastic straws with a plan to stop using them by the end of the year. The company says it will offer compostable paper straws instead. The move is expected to keep 82 million plastic straws out of landfills each year.Christine Ball of the Ecobusiness Network, which helps businesses reduce their environmental footprint, says shifting to more eco-conscious practices is an increasing concern for many companies. And she says moves by large players like Ikea and A&W can have a big impact on the broader sector.“When you start talking about something small like straws then you start to rethink the entire industry — you start rethinking how you’re using plastics overall,” says Ball, based in Whitby, Ont.“The general public and business (both) start to rethink: ‘OK, where else am I using these single-use plastics in my life where I don’t need to be?’”And it doesn’t stop with plastic, she adds.Ball points to a growing interest in the circular economy, in which manufacturing involves recycled materials and waste is eliminated or reused elsewhere. She points to one member company that produces a lot of cork waste, and efforts by the network to connect it to other organizations that grind cork to make cork floors.“Businesses are looking for new solutions as far as waste is concerned. Plastic is a part of it but businesses in our area that we talk to, they’re looking at an overall solution: ‘How do we deal with my organics? How do I deal with my plastics? My paper and my trash?’ I think that the plastics is amazing but it is just the tip of the iceberg.”Indeed, there have been an array of anti-plastic pledges in recent months: hotels including the Marriott and Holiday Inn Express have dumped their complimentary tiny shampoo and conditioner bottles in favour of larger containers that are attached to the bathroom wall; Montreal became the largest Canadian municipality to ban single-use plastic bags earlier this week, and Prince Edward Island is gearing up to become to the first province to do the same.Ikea Canada’s head of sustainability says the company hasn’t determined what alternatives it will offer to single-use plastics, which will also be phased out from customer and co-worker restaurants, bistros, and cafes by the end of 2019.But when Ikea committed to offering only LED lighting, he notes that forced the supply chain to come up with solutions quickly.“We’re hopeful that the commitment that we’re making around the single use plastics will actually encourage others to join us in this journey and then the suppliers that we work with, they can innovate or bring new products to market that will help us fulfil these ambitions,” says Brendan Seale.“In part, it’s an effort to shift the industry, and I think we have an opportunity and the ability to do that based on our scale. And if other large companies can do the same, then I think we’ll see fairly rapid movement on this.”He says Ikea is keen to join the circular economy by looking at new ways to work with renewable and recycled materials, and prolong the life of its products.Seale says Ikea has already taken some steps towards that: its Tanum woven rug is made from off-cuts from production of bed linens; the PS vase is made from the broken glass from production of other Ikea products; and a black matte cabinet door called Kungsbacka is made from recycled wood and PET plastic bottles. That’s important to consumers like Sophi Robertson of Toronto, who has been striving to produce zero waste since 2016.“I try to avoid a lot of the bigger chains but at the same time I try to also support (them) when I see that they’re making those kinds of changes,” says the 39-year-old Robertson, who estimates her family has produced one grocery bag of garbage in the past five months.“I think the big companies are the ones that kind of have to be the leaders in making these changes happen so that everyone else can follow.”last_img read more

Facebook finds sophisticated efforts to disrupt elections

first_imgNEW YORK (AP) — Facebook said it has uncovered “sophisticated” efforts, possibly linked to Russia, to influence U.S. politics on its platforms. The company said it removed 32 accounts from Facebook and Instagram because they were involved in “coordinated” political behavior and appeared to be fake.Facebook stopped short of saying the effort was aimed at influencing the U.S. midterm elections in November, although the timing of the suspicious activity would be consistent with such an attempt.According to a Facebook official, the company held briefings in the House and Senate this week. The official declined to be named because the briefings were private. Facebook disclosed its findings after The New York Times reported on them earlier Tuesday. The company said it doesn’t know who is behind the efforts, but said there may be connections to Russia. Facebook said it has found some connections between the accounts it removed and the accounts connected to Russia’s Internet Research Agency that it removed before and after the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. The earliest page was created in March 2017. Facebook says more than 290,000 accounts followed at least one of the fake pages. The most followed Facebook Pages had names such as “Aztlan Warriors,” ″Black Elevation,” ″Mindful Being,” and “Resisters.”Facebook says the pages ran about 150 ads for $11,000 on Facebook and Instagram, paid for in U.S. and Canadian dollars. The first ad was created in April 2017; the last was created in June 2018.The company added that the perpetrators have been “more careful to cover their tracks” than in 2016, in part because of steps Facebook has taken to prevent abuse over the past year. For example, they used virtual private networks and internet phone services, and paid third parties to run ads on their behalf.__Associated Press Writer Mary Clare Jalonick contributed to this story from Washington.last_img read more
