World Cup Spain World Cup 2018 kit: New retro Adidas design, controversy and all you need to know Ryan Kelly Last updated 1 year ago 18:00 5/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Adidas World Cup Spain WTF La Roja won the tournament for the first time just under a decade ago and they will be hoping their new kit can bring some luck Spain head to Russia in the summer of 2018 in search of their second World Cup title and they have released an all new kit for the occasion.Their kit manufacturers Adidas have delved into the past in search of inspiration for their latest line of national team kits and La Roja’s newest offering is a testimony to that. With the tournament around four months away, Goal takes a look at what Julen Lopetegui’s men will be wearing when they take to the field. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Williams case shows Solskjaer isn’t holding Man Utd’s youngsters back – he’s protecting them Goalkeeper crisis! Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp What does Spain’s World Cup 2018 kit look like?In a dramatic departure from their previous home kit, Spain’s new edition features a geometric pattern which runs vertically down the right side of the front of the jersey. The colours in the pattern are yellow, blue and red, which blends into the base red of the rest of the shirt. While the previous home jersey featured Adidas’ famous three stripes on either side of the torso, they have migrated to the shoulders of the new shirt. The collar, meanwhile, seems to have remained the same, but the Adidas logo has been shifted into the centre, perhaps to highlight the design pattern on the right. How much does the new Spain jersey cost?An authentic Spain home jersey will cost you £99.95 in the UK, while a replica version will be somewhat cheaper at £69.95. Both items can be bought online. In the US, a replica Spain home jersey will set buyers back $90, while an authentic one will cost $130, and they are both available to buy from Adidas’ online store. What is the inspiration?Adidas have sought inspiration from iconic kits of the past in their most recent design efforts and in Spain’s case, they have produced a modern take on the kit worn at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Both the Spanish home and away kits in that tournament featured a prominent design on the right side which was made up of rows of different coloured diamonds. The colours used in the ’94 home kit were yellow, red and navy blue, while the navy blue did not feature in the white away jersey.Unlike the modern interpretation, the classic jersey incoportated a polo-neck style collar, which was navy blue with slim streaks of red and yellow. However, like the modern version, the Adidas logo was placed in the centre of the chest. Why is the Spain World Cup 2018 controversial?Interestingly, the new Spain home kit for the World Cup has proved somewhat controversial to the point where both Adidas and the Spanish football authority (RFEF) have been compelled to make statements in order to quell anger. The combination of red, yellow and blue in the pattern on the right of the jersey has been seized upon by some as deliberately provocative due to the fact that they appear to resemble the colours of the Second Spanish Republic, which is still popularly used by separatist groups.Of course, the flag of the Second Spanish Republic is red, yellow and purple. So the confusion has arisen over whether the colour on the shirt is blue or purple.Adidas and the RFEF insist that the shirt design is “free of any political connotation” but that has not prevented people from having their say and some fans were particularly upset.Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that “politics is creeping into soccer once again” and a number of politicians waded into the controversy. Alberto Garzon, leader of the United Left (IU), said that he preferred the tricolour to simple red and yellow, while Pablo Iglesias of Podemos also expressed his approval. The political climate in Spain at present is particularly tense following the Catalonian government’s decision to press ahead with a contentious independence referendum last October and their subsequent attempts to establish independence from Spanish rule. That may explain the sensitivity. What about the Spain away kit?The Spain away kit for the 2018 World Cup has not yet been released, but it is expected to be launched some time in the Spring of 2018.Spain wore an all-white away kit in the qualification stage, with three red Adidas stripes on the sides and red logos on the chest. It remains unclear whether the away jersey will be similarly inspired by the 1994 World Cup style. It is possible that they will make a change from white and in the past they have gone with a variety of colours, including light blue, blue, dark blue, gold and even black.Either way, both Adidas and the RFEF will be hopeful that it attracts less controversy than its home variant.
Premier League Is football in the Commonwealth Games? Goal 02:45 16/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Getty Images Premier League UEFA Europa League The 2018 Commonwealth Games will begin on April 4 and end on April 15, but is football included in the competition? It’s taken four years, but the 2018 Commonwealth Games are now finally on the horizon.England were runaway leaders in Glasgow in the 2014 games with a total of 174 medals, 58 of which were gold, and will be hoping for a repeat performance this time round. But what is the event, who is competing, and will football be included in the schedule? Goal takes a look. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Williams case shows Solskjaer isn’t holding Man Utd’s youngsters back – he’s protecting them Goalkeeper crisis! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp What is the Commonwealth Games? The first Commonwealth Games was held in 1930 and was marketed as an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.John Astley Cooper, who first proposed the idea of the event in 1891, wanted a ‘Pan-Britannic-Pan-Anglican Contest and Festival every four years as a means of increasing goodwill and good understanding of the British Empire’. Indeed, the Commonwealth is held every four years, with the last taking place in Glasgow, Scotland 2014.There have been a variety of Commonwealth editions, including the ‘British Empire Games’, the ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’, the ‘British Commonwealth Games’, and simply ‘the Commonwealth Games’ as we now know it.The Commonwealth Winter Games ran from 1958 until 1966, the Commonwealth Youth Games have been held every year since 2000, while Para-sports were introduced in 1994 for athletes with a disability before they were included as full members for their national teams in 2002.Where and when is the 2018 Commonwealth Games? The opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held on Wednesday April 5 and will be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The games will come to a close on Sunday April 15.Australia, all-time leaders in the medal table with 852 golds, will host the games for the fifth time in its history. Is football in the Commonwealth Games? In short, no. A minimum of ten core sports and maximum of seventeen sports must be included in any Commonwealth Games schedule, with the current list including athletics, badminton, boxing, hockey, lawn bowls, netball (for women), rugby sevens, squash, swimming and weightlifting. There are also nine para-sports, in this case swimming, athletics, cycling, table tennis, powerlifting, lawn bowls, and a triathalon. On March 8 2016, Beach Volleyball was also officially included in the event list. While football, along with billiards, fencing, and golf, are recognised Commonwealth Games Federation sports, hosts may not select them as official events as the are deemed to ‘need expansion’.With the games running through the middle of April, too, it would not make sense for European club players to participate due to their domestic seasons and with the 2018 World Cup kicking off in the summer.Which sports are played at the Commonwealth Games? The official list of sports included in the 2018 Commonwealth Games is as followed: Sports Athletics Badminton Basketball Beach volleyball Boxing Mountain biking Road cycling Track cycling Diving Artistic Gymnastics Rhythmic Gymnastics Hockey Lawn bowls Netball Powerlifting Rugby sevens Shooting Squash Swimming Table tennis Triathlon Weightlifting Wrestling Where and when is the 2018 Commonwealth Games? The opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held on Wednesday April 5 and will be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Viktoria Plzen 2 Sporting CP 1 (aet, 2-3 agg): Battaglia header sends visitors into quarter-finals Ryan Benson 04:37 16/3/2018 Getty Images Rodrigo Battaglia’s extra-time goal proved crucial, as Sporting CP beat Viktoria Plzen 3-2 on aggregate despite losing 2-1 on Thursday. Sporting CP have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League thanks to a 3-2 aggregate win over Viktoria Plzen, as Rodrigo Battaglia got the vital goal in extra-time in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat. The Portuguese side’s luck appeared to have deserted them when Bas Dost saw a penalty saved in second-half stoppage time, sending the game to extra-time after Marek Bakos’ brace had wiped out Sporting’s 2-0 lead from the first leg.But Jorge Jesus’ men stepped things up a notch in the first half of extra-time, making the most of their superiority with Battaglia’s header on the stroke of the interval, and Plzen – who needed another two goals in response – were left deflated. Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp It took the home side just six minutes to pull themselves back into the tie, as Bakos headed in at the far post following a fine Jan Kovarik cross from deep on the left flank. However, Sporting did a good job of restricting their flow of further chances, and they should have drawn level just before the break – Bryan Ruiz slamming a left-footed volley wide from about eight yards out.Sporting missed another glorious opportunity early in the second half.Bruno Fernandes’ long-range strike was parried to Marcos Acuna, whose follow-up effort bounced back off the right-hand post before he then hit the rebound over. And Plzen capitalised just after the hour mark – Bakos sweeping into the bottom-right corner from just out the six-yard box following Radim Reznik’s pinpoint cut-back.Dost was presented with the perfect chance to get a vital away goal right at the end of normal time, but his tame penalty – which he had won – was easily saved by Plzen goalkeeper Ales Hruska, securing extra-time for the hosts.Sporting’s progression, though, was ultimately sealed just before half-time in extra-time, as Battaglia headed in Fernandes’ cross, taking Sporting into the last eight.
To start, it’s notable that J.W. Walsh had already played in three games before drawing his first start. Of that group, Sanders and Wes Lunt won their starts, as OSU throttled Savannah State 84-0 in the 2012 season opener.Sanders and Walsh were redshirt freshmen, whereas Mason Rudolph and Lunt were true freshmen. Sanders was more dynamic on his feet than those other three in his first start. His 109 rushing yards were 52 more than what Walsh had.Now here is a look at Sanders’ numbers compared to the first start numbers of the top quarterbacks of the Mike Gundy era: 2014Mason Rudolph132528122 2010Brandon Weeden223021830 2014Mason Rudolph132528122 SeasonPlayerCompletionsAttemptsYardsTouchdownsINTs 2012Wes Lunt111112900 2007Zac Robinson183719112 If a freshman quarterback is good enough to start a game at Oklahoma State, odds are that guy is pretty good at football. In the Cowboys’ 52-36 victory against Oregon State Friday night/Saturday morning in Corvallis, Spencer Sanders became the fourth freshman gunslinger to start a game at Oklahoma State is the past 10 seasons. The Beavers’ defense didn’t put up the biggest fight, but Sanders was undeniably electric. He finished his first game of college football with 312 total yards, a 79-percent completion percentage and three scores. Here are Sanders’ passing numbers compared to the other three freshmen to start games at OSU in the past 10 seasons. Rudolph and Robinson each lost their first start, with Robinson’s coming against Troy. There is obviously a lot more that goes into getting these numbers, and this early in Sanders’ career, these aren’t more than numbers on a chart. In October, multi-platinum Streamsound recording artist Kristian Bush of Sugarland and Goodwill Industries International announced their #GiveItAway partnership to encourage donations of used clothing and goods. To get in the holiday spirit and help kick off the new campaign, Bush and Goodwill are teaming up for a full-band concert and donation event, sponsored by KKBQ-FM “The New 93Q” in Houston, TX, to be held on Thursday, December 11 at the Big Texas Dancehall (South). Fans are encouraged to bring either an item or financial donation for FREE entry into the concert event, with all donations benefiting Goodwill Houston. The #GiveItAway campaign was sparked by Bush’s Top 30-and-climbing single, “Trailer Hitch,” which reminds us that we collect so many things that we don’t need and we can’t take it with us when we go… so why not “give it away”? The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of Goodwill’s mission to transform lives through the power of creating jobs.“This feels perfect,” says Bush of this upcoming concert. “KKBQ was the first radio station I visited to play my new music at the start of this year. So now it just seems right to wrap up this amazing 2014 with a big holiday blowout in Houston. I’m excited that I get to use my partnership with Goodwill to do something good for this community, and I hope country fans will come out for a great night of live music in the name of giving back.”Using the catchy, irresistible hook of “Trailer Hitch,” Bush is helping to spread the word that when fans “give it away” to Goodwill, the revenue from the sale of their donated clothing, electronics, and small household goods goes directly to create employment opportunities for people in their communities with disabilities or disadvantages.“The simple act of giving away what you no longer need builds independence and dignity for people who need support to provide for themselves and their families,” said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Bush’s message in ‘Trailer Hitch’ aligns perfectly with Goodwill’s mission by helping people realize the impact they have by donating the items they no longer need to Goodwill.”“Trailer Hitch” brings Bush’s voice to the foreground and is the lead single from his forthcoming debut solo album, SOUTHERN GRAVITY (Streamsound Records), executive produced by Byron Gallimore. “Trailer Hitch” is available on iTunes.WHEN: Thursday, December 11 Show starts at 9PM / Doors open at 6PM Open to 18+WHERE: Big Texas Dancehall (South) 803 E. The 2017 leg of Coldplay’s ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ tour, which comes to the U.S. on August 1st, marks 15 years of Oxfam working with Coldplay. In that time, over 60,000 Coldplay fans have signed up to support Oxfam campaigns to highlight unfair trade practices and the plight of refugees.Chris Martin said: “As a band, we’re really proud to have had Oxfam on the road with us for the past fifteen years. It’s given our incredible fans the chance to show their support for campaigns from Make Trade Fair to supporting refugees.”Coldplay has been among Oxfam’s most high profile and vocal supporters, using their worldwide success to help Oxfam campaign on all five of their tours in over 50 countries. Front man Chris Martin first travelled with Oxfam in 2002 to Haiti. Since then he’s visited coffee farmers and projects in India.Oxfam first joined Coldplay on their 2003 ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’ tour, then the 2005 ‘Twisted Logic’ tour, their mammoth ‘Viva La Vida’ world tour in 2008/9 and again at their ‘Mylo Xyloto’ tour in 2012. During that time, thousands of volunteers have been recruited in each country to talk to fans at the concerts. In 2016 Oxfam campaigners launched the Stand as One campaign to highlight the need to help and protect people forced to flee conflict and disaster. So far 32,000 Coldplay concert goers have signed up to the campaign. Rachel Edwards, Oxfam’s on tour coordinator said: “The tour is really important in creating a global movement of Coldplay fans from the Philippines to the UK who are standing with refugees and demanding that world leaders do more. More than 65 million people have been forced to leave their homes through no fault of their own, and it’s fantastic to see how the people we meet on the tour want to support our campaign for change.”A few volunteer spots remain for music fans who’d like to join Oxfam and Coldplay at shows on this tour. NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook said it has uncovered “sophisticated” efforts, possibly linked to Russia, to influence U.S. politics on its platforms. The company said it removed 32 accounts from Facebook and Instagram because they were involved in “coordinated” political behavior and appeared to be fake.Facebook stopped short of saying the effort was aimed at influencing the U.S. midterm elections in November, although the timing of the suspicious activity would be consistent with such an attempt.According to a Facebook official, the company held briefings in the House and Senate this week. The official declined to be named because the briefings were private. Facebook disclosed its findings after The New York Times reported on them earlier Tuesday. The company said it doesn’t know who is behind the efforts, but said there may be connections to Russia. Facebook said it has found some connections between the accounts it removed and the accounts connected to Russia’s Internet Research Agency that it removed before and after the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. The earliest page was created in March 2017. Facebook says more than 290,000 accounts followed at least one of the fake pages. The most followed Facebook Pages had names such as “Aztlan Warriors,” ″Black Elevation,” ″Mindful Being,” and “Resisters.”Facebook says the pages ran about 150 ads for $11,000 on Facebook and Instagram, paid for in U.S. and Canadian dollars. The first ad was created in April 2017; the last was created in June 2018.The company added that the perpetrators have been “more careful to cover their tracks” than in 2016, in part because of steps Facebook has taken to prevent abuse over the past year. For example, they used virtual private networks and internet phone services, and paid third parties to run ads on their behalf.__Associated Press Writer Mary Clare Jalonick contributed to this story from Washington.
Kolkata: BJP President Amit Shah’s scheduled rally in West Bengal’s Baruipur on Monday was cancelled after the landowner who had rented out his property withdrew his consent, a party spokesperson said here. “The rally at Baruipur stands cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances,” the Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson said. The land was rented out for the rally as well as for setting up a helipad. Apart from the Baruipur rally, Shah was supposed to hold public meetings at South 24 Parganas’ Canning and North 24 Parganas’ Rajarhat. However, the saffron party alleged that they were forced to cancel the meeting due to the autocracy of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool government. That time we were given a hope, but it was suddenly denied yesterday (Sunday) at 8.30 p.m.,” the party said in its Twitter handle. “This is a murder of democracy. The Election Commission must take action against it,” it said. Party’s National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said: “The District Magistrate is simply working on the behalf of Trinamool. He took a dilly-dallying approach for giving permission for the rally and eventually, the permission was denied last night. The permission for landing of helicopter was initially given and then, it too was withdrawn.” He accused the official of not following the Election Commission’s direction. “He does not deserve to hold his post and the polls would not be free and fair if he stays at his post. We will raise the issue before the commission,” he added.
